Depression

I wanted to write down exactly what I felt,

but somehow the paper stayed empty,

and I could not have described it any better.

You feel empty, hollow, and alone

Life has lost its flavor, and you’re tired

of everything tasting like cardboard.

You and your bed have become one, and you’re not okay with that.

You’re tired and exhausted.  You feel worthless, sad, and disconnected.  Purpose, passion, and peace escape you at every turn. 

 

In a world of 7 billion people,

with infinite ways to communicate, you feel isolated.

Even when you manage to speak to friends and family,

you feel separate and unheard.

In a room full of loved ones,

you might as well be the only person standing there.

 

You feel heavy, pressed down, and burdened,

like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. 

You feel like a burden to others.

You think they don’t want to or can’t handle what you’re experiencing.

It’s crushing your spirit, your joy, and your hope.

It’s one step forward, and two steps back.

You’re sinking deeper and deeper into the mud,

and you can barely move.

 

You keep hoping to see a light at the end of the tunnel,

but it’s so dark you’re not sure if you’re even moving in the right direction.

Forget a light at the end of the tunnel,

you’d settle for a tiny match, anything to give a sense of which way to go,

of how to get out.

 

You’re finished.  Finito.  Done and yet...you persist.

 

Let’s do something about it.

 

So far, you’ve survived 100% of your worst days.

You’re doing great.

 

Carrying a burden doesn’t make you a burden.

You are not your burdens.

Let’s work to make your mind, heart, and soul believe this. 

 

You can have purpose

You can have passion. 

You can have peace

You can feel happy

You can feel connected.

 

Right now, you feel like a wave being dashed against the rocks,

tossed about without any direction or control.

 

You are not the wave. 

 

You are the ocean.
